An explorer is a public receipt reader. Start with the question you need answered and ignore the rest until it matters.

Match the explorer to the network

A transaction hash does not tell a search engine which chain you intended. Open the explorer for the network you actually used. If a hash returns no result, check the network before assuming the transaction failed.

Prefer an explorer linked from official network documentation. Scam sites can imitate explorers and add fake support chat or wallet-connect prompts. Reading a public transaction should not require your seed phrase or a payment.

Read six fields first

Status tells you whether execution succeeded, failed, or is pending. From and To identify the initiating account and destination. Value shows the native asset transferred. Token transfer sections show token movements. Fee records the network cost. Block or confirmations indicate where the transaction sits in chain history.

  • Status: pending, success, or failed.
  • Network: the chain the explorer represents.
  • From and To: public addresses, not verified human identities.
  • Value and token transfers: what moved.
  • Fee: what the sender paid the network.
  • Input or method: what contract action was requested.

Know what the explorer cannot prove

A successful transaction proves the network executed the request. It does not prove the recipient is the person you intended, that a token is legitimate, or that an exchange has credited your account. Labels are useful context, not legal identity.
